Mission and Outreach

Hamilton Christian Church considers itself a congregation that reaches out to local, national and world causes that aid those who are in need.  This reaching out manifests itself in a variety of ways: monetary gifts, specific requests for items, and gifts of time and talent.

The following are some areas of outreach that are ongoing and have become tradition:

A percentage of Hamilton’s general fund from pledges and gifts are shared between four entities:

1.  Disciples Mission Fund
2.  Southeast Gateway Area of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) (SEGA)
3.  Neighborhood Houses
4.  Isaiah 58 Ministries

Food Bank -  Donating and delivering food is an ongoing project each Sunday at Hamilton Christian Church. Bring your canned food or non-perishable items and put them in the baskets located in the hallways. The donated items are dedicated during the morning offering.   The food banks are always in need of food and they greatly appreciate Hamilton's generosity.

Christmas Stockings/Hat Trees - A Hamilton Tradition! In October of each year, the congregation attaches approximately 180 red mesh Christmas stockings filled with toys and stuffed animals for 4-8 year olds, to a 12 foot stepladder in the front of the sanctuary to resemble a Christmas tree.   A smaller tree covered with knitted hats, gloves and scarves is also displayed for two Sundays and dedicated during worship.  The stockings are cut and stitched by volunteers and then filled by members of the congregation.  These items are delivered to The Board of Religious Organizations (BRO), a non-profit service organization that provides Holiday gifts for needy children ages newborn - 10 years of age, where they are distributed in November.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry- Shawls, hand made by members and their friends, are given to persons in the congregation experiencing long term illness. While the crafter is making the shawl, he/she prays for the unknown future recipient of the gift.   We do not, at this time, get together to crochet or knit, (instructions for the shawls are available through the church office) but encourage anyone to bring items to church for distribution to our own Prayer Shawl recipients and other organizations.  Hamilton also donates to The Disciples Chaplaincy Care Program, where the chaplains visit veteran homes and nursing homes and BRO, which can also use lap robes, 36x40, baby blankets 40x50 and receiving blankets, 36x36.  A container is available in the Fireside Room each Sunday.                                                                                                                                                                                        CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Program is a 5 week training program designed to teach you how to respond to your immediate needs after a disaster.  It can help you prepare to protect yourself, your family and your neighbors in an emergency.  Several members of Hamilton Christian Church are graduates of this program that was held at Hamilton in the summer of 2009.
